Description

The Ultimate Butter Burger Recipe features juicy, perfectly cooked beef patties topped with melted American cheese and sweet sautéed onions, all nestled between buttered, toasted buns. This quick and indulgent stovetop recipe yields rich, flavorful burgers with a deliciously buttery twist that’s perfect for any burger lover craving a classic comfort meal.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Onions

  • 2 tablespoons salted butter, softened
  • 1 medium sweet onion, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt

For the Burgers

  • 1 pound 90% lean ground beef
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¾ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1-2 tablespoons salted butter, for cooking
  • 4 slices American cheese

For the Buns

  • 4 homemade burger buns, toasted
  • 8 tablespoons (1 stick) salted butter, softened, divided (2 tablespoons per bun top)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Onions: In a large skillet over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Add the chopped sweet onion, 1 tablespoon water, and ¼ teaspoon kosher salt. Cover and cook until the onions become tender, approximately 5 minutes.
  2. Finish Cooking the Onions: Reduce heat to medium-low and remove the lid. Continue cooking the onions until they turn translucent and begin to brown gently, about 3 more minutes. Transfer the onions to a plate, divide them into four equal portions, and set aside.
  3. Prepare Burger Patties: Divide the ground beef into 4 equal parts and gently shape each into a 4½ by ½ inch patty. Evenly sprinkle the remaining ½ teaspoon kosher salt and ¾ teaspoon black pepper on both sides of each patty. Refrigerate the patties for 15 to 30 minutes to firm up.
  4. Butter the Buns: Spread 2 tablespoons of softened butter on each bun top. Set them aside until assembly.
  5. Cook the Patties: In the same skillet used for the onions, heat 1 to 2 tablespoons of butter over medium-high heat until it starts to smoke. Place the patties in the skillet and sear without moving for 3 minutes to create a flavorful crust.
  6. Finish Cooking the Patties: Flip each patty and cook for another minute. Immediately place a slice of American cheese on each patty and cook until the cheese melts, about 20 to 30 seconds.
  7. Assemble the Burgers: Place each cheese-topped patty on the bottom half of a toasted bun. Add ¼ of the sautéed onions on top, then cover with the buttered bun tops. Serve immediately to enjoy the buttery, savory flavors at their peak.

Notes

  • Using 90% lean beef provides a juicy yet manageable fat content for flavor and texture.
  • Butter enhances both the cooking process and the flavor of the buns for a richer burger experience.
  • Allowing patties to chill before cooking helps them hold their shape and cook evenly.
  • Covering onions during initial cooking steams them nicely to soften without browning prematurely.
  • Use a heavy skillet (like cast iron) for best sear results.
