Ingredients
Scale
Strawberry Filling
- 4 cups sliced strawberries
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1 tablespoon sugar
Cream Cheese Filling
- 8 oz (226 g) cream cheese, room temperature
- ½ cup (60 g) powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Puff Pastry
- 2 puff pastry sheets, thawed
- 1 large egg, lightly beaten with 1 teaspoon water (egg wash)
- 2–3 tablespoons sugar for topping (optional)
Toppings
- ¼ cup (60 ml) strawberry jam (optional)
- 1 cup (120 g) powdered sugar
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2–3 tablespoons (30–45 ml) milk
Instructions
- Prepare the Strawberries: Clean and slice the strawberries. In a bowl, combine the sliced strawberries with 1 tablespoon sugar and 1 tablespoon cornstarch. Stir well and let the mixture sit for 15 minutes to macerate and thicken.
- Make the Cream Cheese Filling: In a mixing bowl, blend the room temperature cream cheese with ½ cup powdered sugar and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth and creamy.
- Prepare the Puff Pastry: Preheat your oven to 400°F (204°C). Roll out the thawed puff pastry sheets on a lightly floured surface. Cut each sheet into equal squares or rectangles, depending on your desired danish size. Spread a generous amount of the cream cheese filling onto each piece, then layer the macerated strawberries on top.
- Apply Egg Wash and Sugar Topping: Brush the edges and tops of the puff pastry with the beaten egg wash to ensure a golden brown finish. Sprinkle 2 to 3 tablespoons of sugar over the top of each danish if desired for added sweetness and crunch.
- Bake the Danishes: Arrange the prepared danishes on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake in the preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes or until the puff pastry is puffed, flaky, and golden brown.
- Prepare the Vanilla Glaze: While the danishes bake, whisk together 1 cup powdered sugar, ½ teaspoon vanilla extract, and 2 to 3 tablespoons milk until smooth and drizzle-able.
- Finish and Serve: Once baked, allow the danishes to cool slightly. For an extra touch, warm the strawberry jam and brush it over the top of each danish for a glossy finish. Alternatively, drizzle the prepared vanilla glaze over them before serving.
Notes
- Use fresh, ripe strawberries for the best flavor and texture.
- Make sure cream cheese is softened to room temperature for easy blending.
- Egg wash gives puff pastry a beautiful golden color and shine.
- Optional toppings like sugar on top add a nice crunch, while the glaze adds sweetness and moisture.
- This recipe can be doubled or halved depending on your needs.
- For a dairy-free version, substitute cream cheese with a vegan cream cheese alternative.
