Ingredients
Scale
For the Crust
- 1 can (8 oz) refrigerated crescent roll dough
For the Sausage Gravy
- 0.5 pound ground breakfast sausage
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 0.75 cup whole milk
- 0.25 teaspoon black pepper
For the Topping
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 0.5 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- Chopped fresh parsley (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat and prepare crust: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish or sheet pan. Unroll the crescent roll dough and press it into the dish, making sure to seal the seams. Bake the crust for 8 minutes until it turns lightly golden.
- Cook the sausage: While the crust bakes, heat a skillet over medium heat. Add the ground breakfast sausage and cook until browned and crumbled, about 5-7 minutes. Do not drain the grease as it adds flavor to the gravy.
- Make the sausage gravy: Sprinkle the flour over the cooked sausage in the skillet and cook while stirring for 1 minute to remove the raw flour taste. Slowly whisk in the whole milk, continuing to stir until the gravy thickens, approximately 3 to 5 minutes. Season the gravy with black pepper to taste.
- Assemble the pizza: Spread the sausage gravy evenly over the pre-baked crescent roll crust in the baking dish.
- Add cheese: Sprinkle the shredded cheddar and mozzarella cheeses evenly over the sausage gravy layer.
- Bake the pizza: Return the assembled pizza to the oven and bake for an additional 8 to 10 minutes until the cheese is completely melted and bubbly.
- Garnish and serve: Remove the pizza from the oven and optionally garnish with chopped fresh parsley. Allow it to cool slightly, then slice into 12 squares and serve warm.
Notes
- For a spicier flavor, consider using spicy breakfast sausage or adding a pinch of cayenne pepper to the gravy.
- Make sure not to overbake the crescent roll crust initially, as it will cook further once the toppings are added.
- This recipe can be doubled for larger gatherings by using two cans of crescent roll dough and scaling the ingredients accordingly.
- Leftovers can be refrigerated and reheated in the oven or microwave but are best enjoyed fresh.
