Description

This Easy Salisbury Steak recipe features tender ground beef patties smothered in a rich brown gravy, perfect for a comforting and quick weeknight dinner. Made with simple pantry ingredients and cooked on the stovetop, it’s a classic American dish that pairs perfectly with mashed potatoes or steamed vegetables.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Patties

  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1/3 cup bread crumbs
  • 2 teaspoons ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder

For the Gravy

  • 2 packets Brown Gravy Mix (approximately 1 oz each)
  • 2 cups hot water
  • 1 teaspoon ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon avocado oil (for cooking)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Patties: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, bread crumbs, ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder. Use clean hands to mix thoroughly. Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape each into a flat patty.
  2. Cook Patties: Heat 1 tablespoon of avocado oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until browned and cooked through. Be sure to adjust the heat if necessary to avoid burning. Remove patties from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Make Gravy: In a bowl, whisk together the brown gravy mix, hot water, ketchup, and Worcestershire sauce until smooth and fully combined.
  4. Combine and Simmer: Pour the gravy mixture into the skillet, scraping up any browned bits leftover from the patties. Bring to a simmer over low heat. Return the cooked patties to the skillet, spoon gravy over them, and gently stir. Let the mixture simmer for 3-5 minutes until the gravy thickens slightly. If the gravy becomes too thick, add an additional 1/4 cup hot water and stir to adjust consistency.
  5. Serve: Serve the Salisbury steaks hot, generously spooning the gravy over each patty. Best enjoyed with mashed potatoes or steamed vegetables.

Notes

  • Using lean ground beef helps reduce excess grease during cooking.
  • You can substitute bread crumbs with crushed crackers or oats if preferred.
  • If you don’t have brown gravy mix, you can use a homemade gravy recipe as an alternative.
  • Make sure not to overcrowd the skillet while cooking patties to ensure they brown evenly.
  • Adjust seasoning in the patties as per your taste preference.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
