Ingredients
Scale
Berry Mixture
- 7 cups fresh or frozen mixed berries
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 tablespoon cornstarch
Crisp Topping
- 2/3 cup old-fashioned oats
- 2/3 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup salted butter, melted
Instructions
- Preheat Oven and Prepare Baking Dish: Preheat your oven to 350 °F (175 °C). Generously grease a 7×11-inch or 9×9-inch baking dish with butter to prevent sticking.
- Mix Berry Filling: In the prepared baking dish, combine the mixed berries, granulated sugar, lemon juice, 1/4 cup flour, and cornstarch. Gently stir with a large spoon to ensure the berries are evenly coated but not crushed.
- Prepare Crisp Topping: In a large mixing bowl, combine the oats, 2/3 cup flour, both sugars, cinnamon, and salt. Stir well to blend the dry ingredients uniformly.
- Add Butter to Topping: Pour the melted butter into the dry ingredients and mix thoroughly until the mixture forms clumps resembling wet sand.
- Assemble and Bake: Evenly sprinkle the crisp topping over the berry mixture in the baking dish. Bake uncovered for 35 minutes or until the berry filling is bubbly and the topping is golden brown. If the topping browns too quickly, tent a piece of foil over the dish during the last 10 minutes to prevent burning.
- Cool and Serve: Remove from the oven and let the crisp sit for about 8 minutes to allow the filling to thicken. Serve warm, ideally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an indulgent finish.
Notes
- Using frozen berries is a convenient alternative to fresh; no need to thaw before baking.
- For a gluten-free version, substitute all-purpose flour with a gluten-free flour blend.
- Feel free to customize with your favorite berries or add fruits like sliced peaches or apples.
- Leftovers can be stored covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- To make the crisp topping extra crunchy, add 1/4 cup chopped nuts like pecans or walnuts.
