Ingredients
Scale
Dough and Filling
- 1 package crescent roll dough or puff pastry (enough for 12 cruffins)
- 4 tablespoons softened butter
- 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- Optional: 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
- Optional: 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- Optional add-ins: 3 tablespoons Nutella, 1/4 cup raisins, or 1/4 cup chocolate chips
Glaze
- 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
- 1 cup confectioners’ sugar
- 2 tablespoons milk or heavy cream (to thin, if necessary)
Instructions
- Prepare the dough: Roll out the crescent roll dough or puff pastry evenly on a clean surface to create a flat rectangle, ensuring consistent thickness for even baking.
- Apply the butter: Spread the softened butter evenly over the entire surface of the dough using a spatula or butter knife to add richness to the layers.
- Sprinkle cinnamon sugar: Combine the cinnamon, brown sugar, granulated sugar, and optional spices (cardamom and nutmeg) in a small bowl, then sprinkle this mixture evenly over the buttered dough.
- Add optional fillings: If desired, evenly scatter Nutella, raisins, or chocolate chips over the cinnamon sugar layer for extra flavor and texture.
- Roll and slice: Starting from one long edge, roll the dough tightly into a log. Using a sharp knife, cut the log into 12 equal pieces to form the cruffins.
- Arrange in muffin tin: Place each sliced piece upright into a greased or non-stick muffin tin, allowing room for expansion as they bake.
- Bake: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake the cruffins for 20-25 minutes, or until they are golden brown and cooked through.
- Cool and glaze: Allow the cruffins to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack. Meanwhile, prepare the glaze by whisking softened cream cheese with confectioners’ sugar and milk until smooth. Drizzle this glaze over the cooled cruffins before serving.
Notes
- You can substitute crescent roll dough with puff pastry for a flakier texture.
- Adjust the sweetness of the glaze by adding more or less confectioners’ sugar to taste.
- Store leftover cruffins in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
- Reheat briefly in the oven or microwave before serving for a fresh-baked taste.
- Feel free to experiment with different fillings like chopped nuts or dried fruit.
