Description

A delicious and easy-to-make Chow Mein recipe featuring tender chow mein noodles, fresh vegetables, and a savory homemade chow mein sauce. This stir-fried dish can include your choice of chicken or tofu for added protein and is perfect for a quick weeknight dinner.

Ingredients

Scale

Vegetables and Protein

  • 1 cup shredded cabbage
  • 1 cup julienned carrots
  • 1 cup snow peas
  • 4 green onions, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup cooked chicken or tofu (optional)

Noodles

  • 8 oz chow mein noodles

Sauce

  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon sugar

Cooking Oil

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • Additional oil as needed for stir-frying

Instructions

  1. Prepare Ingredients: Slice all vegetables and optional protein; set aside to ensure all components are ready before cooking.
  2. Cook Noodles: Cook chow mein noodles according to package directions. Drain, rinse under cold water to prevent sticking, and toss with a little oil to keep them separated.
  3. Make Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, oyster sauce, sesame oil, and sugar until the sugar dissolves.
  4. Cook Protein: Heat vegetable oil in a skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Cook chicken or tofu until browned and cooked through, then remove from pan and set aside.
  5. Stir-Fry Vegetables: Add more oil to the pan if needed. Sauté minced garlic for about 30 seconds until fragrant, then add carrots, snow peas, and cabbage. Stir-fry for 2 to 3 minutes until vegetables are tender-crisp.
  6. Combine and Sauce: Return noodles and cooked protein to the pan with the vegetables. Pour in the prepared sauce and stir-fry for 2 more minutes, mixing everything thoroughly until well coated and heated through.
  7. Finish and Serve: Sprinkle chopped green onions over the stir-fry, toss once more, and serve hot immediately.

Notes

  • You can substitute chicken or tofu with shrimp or beef for variety.
  • Adjust the amount of soy sauce or oyster sauce according to your taste preferences.
  • For a vegetarian or vegan option, ensure oyster sauce is replaced with a vegetarian alternative.
  • Using fresh vegetables keeps the stir-fry crisp and vibrant.
  • Chow mein noodles can be replaced with other thin noodles if unavailable.
